The statue 'Nature Unveiling Herself before Science' graces the entrance to the Montreal Neurological Institute of McGill University.

The object of a scientist's study has long been characterised as female/nature with the male scientist seeking mastery over her; penetrating or unveiling her secrets. In 1899, a statue was exhibited of a young woman uncovering her breasts in the gesture of bridal unveiling which illustrates this conception, science was represented as a male prerogative, a masculine practice of looking at and interpreting a female object.

According to some feminist theory, the epistemology of 'masculine' science is the relentless drive to seek out nature, to penetrate her veils in order to isolate the single principle that governs her behavior. As Michel Foucault notes, the veil is an important metaphor in this practice. This image has been explored in some detail by Ludmilla Jordanova in her description of the statue 'Nature Unveiling Herself before Science': "The figure of the young woman is covered except for her breasts, and she raises both her hands to the veil on her head in order to remove it". In Sexual Anarchy, Elaine Showalter imagines a complementary statue, 'Science Looking at Nature': "a fully clothed man, whose gaze was bold, direct, and keen, the penetrating gaze of intellectual and sexual mastery".

'La Nature se Devoilant devant la Science', bronze statue created around 1899 by Louis-Ernest Barrias (1841-1905). Barrias's seductively draped female figure represents, in allegorical form, Nature revealing her secrets to Science, a fitting theme for the late nineteenth century. The interest in nature literally apparent in the work of the Barbizon school and the Impressionists is here portrayed in the symbolic manner favored by Salon sculptors. The erotic overtones of the figure's pose and the richly varied colors of the bronze surface are characteristic of the opulent taste of the late nineteenth century, while the flowing linear patterns of the drapery and the curving outline of the figure suggest the forms of Art Nouveau.

While they did absolutely nothing to earn their celebrity besides kick up their Lucite heels while canoodling with similar B-list celebrities at it-bars across the world, their stars were officially launched in a September/2000 Vanity Fair spread.
At the time, Paris and Nicky were just 19 and 16 years of age, respectively. But they let it all hang out, literally in Paris's case. In this photo spread, shot by the gay pal David LaChapelle , Paris is pictured wearing a see-through mesh tank-top while flipping the bird in her grandmother's Beverly Hills living room, as well as playing peek-a-boo with her right nipple while laying sprawled on a beach surrounded by surfers, who looked more puzzled than lustful. The Hilton family, allegedly, didn't know anything about these pictures until the issue of VF hit the stands, and was quite dissapointed by the explicitness of the images, which of course was just the beginning - apparently, around the same time Paris and Rick Salomon were filming the infamous hardcore homevideo, which was released all over the Internet in October/2003 and later came out on DVD, and really made Paris Hilton noticed.

Paris Hilton and David Lachapelle at the 2004 MTV Video Music Awards, Paris' dress doesn't really leave anything to imagination.

In the third picture we see Paris and Nicky at the 2003 MTV Movie Awards, this time it's not a see-through attire she's wearing, but this sad fact is well compensated for, if you know what I mean.

AIDeS, association de lutte contre le SIDA, came up with this pretty weird AIDS prevention campaign, displaying a guy copulating with a scorpion and a girl who is about to do it with a tarantula. The slogan on the posters reads: Sans préservatif, c'est le sida avec que vous faites l'amour. Protéger-vous, which translates: Without a condom it's the AIDS you're making love to. Protect yourself.
Some people do say though that these ads make them never wanna have sex again, so I guess AIDeS people kinda got their message through.

A battle of silver spoons: six years after the beginning of one of the most bitterly bizarre inheritance lawsuits in Danish and Swedish history, daily newspaper Ekstra Bladet reported that a banished heir has won his rightful settlement.

The story of Michael Palmstierna Hamilton, a dapper Swede with the ruddy complexion of a born aristocrat, begins, in Copenhagen, with an eccentric heiress whose life story is parlayed in repeat broadcasts of the popular 1996 DR documentary 'The Countess on the Third Floor.'

Erna Hamilton was a flame-haired socialite and relic of Copenhagen's bygone upper crust. The daughter of a capital city industrial scion, a surprisingly robust 96-year-old Erna Hamilton shared with interviewers the story of her charmed early life in an extravagant Copenhagen palais. Though she died the same year the documentary originally aired, television audiences couldn't get enough of the eccentric Erna, with French affectations, recalling her laissez-faire attitude to the Great Depression, her long life on the purse-strings of well-to-do parents, and her three marriages, all on a steady diet of morning martinis and canned caviar served by a working-class butler. Despite her obvious eccentricities, totally out of step with the benevolent socialism many of us have grown up with, Countess Hamilton's place in 20th century Danish cultural history is undeniable. Erna was once the wealthiest woman in Denmark, heiress to the Simonsen industrial fortune, onetime lover of the nation's most famous stage actor Johannes Poulsen, and mistress of the extravagant manse known as Little Amalienborg, which still stands on Dag Hammerskjold's Allé (the estate was seized from the Simonsens by Nazi occupiers during World War II).

Erna was mother to a son from her first, doomed marriage to British-Swedish Count J. Douglas Hamilton. Her mysterious son, Ulph, born in 1920, later immigrated to Sweden, and did little to credit the family reputation. He joined the Waffen SS during World War II, and after revelations of his Nazi past emerged with charges of embezzlement, he committed suicide in 1967. But Ulph Hamilton had another skeleton in his closet. Though married to a well-to-do Swedish woman in 1959, Ulph died apparently childless. Shortly after his death, however, reports emerged of a poor Swedish commoner named Margaretha Palmstierna, who bore a son, Michael, after a one-night stand with Ulph Hamilton at a Stockholm masquerade ball on New Year's Eve 1955. Despite the passing resemblance to the ginger-haired Simonsen clan, Sweden's Supreme Court ruled in 1969 that there was not sufficient proof for Palmstierna's paternity claim.

Meanwhile, Erna Hamilton - who later married Denmark's General Consul to the Dominican Republic - declared that she had no living heirs, and willed a sizable portion of her father's estate to a charitable foundation, the Erna Hamilton Scholarship for Science and the Arts. Despite limited liquid assets, the financial anchor of the foundation has remained its lucrative real estate holdings, worth an estimated DKK 150 million.

Shortly after the 1996 documentary, DR produced an independent documentary on Palmstierna. 'A True Hamilton?' followed Michael's demand to legitimize his identity. In 1999, Sweden's Supreme Court made the shocking decision to re-open the Hamilton paternity case, after DNA evidence provided by Ulph Hamilton's half-brother revealed a more than 99 percent certainty that he and Palmstierna were related. Palmstierna won the right to bear the Hamilton name, and was recognized as one of Sweden's 601 nobles. Even Ulph's surviving widow, Ulla Birgitta Hamilton, spoke publicly of her support for Michael's claim.

But Erna Hamilton refused to acknowledge Michael's existence even to her death. Today, Michael Palmstierna - who lives and works in Biarritz, France - admits he could have handled the case better.

'I just showed up one day. Today I realize that older people need time to accept things,' Palmstierna Hamilton told DR.

Palmstierna's shameless appeals to the press were also promptly exploited. After vowing that no price was too high to pay for the Gerda Wegener portrait of Ulph Hamilton as a bonny two-year-old, under auction from the Hamilton estate, auction-goers queued up to outbid him, inflating the price from it's appraised DKK 15,000 value to a whopping DKK 146,000.

After this week, however, that's small change to the new Count Palmstierna Hamilton. Under Danish law, children cannot be denied the inheritance of their parents. Regardless of the terms of a will and testament, half of any estate must devolve to surviving children. Ekstra Bladet reported this week that the born-again count was granted DKK 7 million of the Hamilton foundation's assets.

She is a dissident, an ex-fashion model, a writer and a poetess, her full name may sound something like 'contessa Elena Kozlova Shchapova Limonova de Carli'. Born Elena Kozlova (Елена Козлова) in 1950 in Moscow, she started her career as a model, at the age of 18 married a much older artist Victor Shchapov (Виктор Щапов) and became a part of the social life of early '70s Moscow beau monde, frequenting movie festivals, art gallery presentations and foreign embassy receptions.

Elena's affair with a dissident writer and poet Eduard Limonov (Едуард Лимонов) let to the divorce with Shchapov; she married Limonov in October/1973. In the picture taken in 1974 in Moscow, nude Elena is sitting in front of Limonov, who is wearing his famous 'national hero's blazer' made of 114 pieces of different fabric.

In 1974, using fake invitation to Israel, Limonov and Shchapova left Soviet Union and arrived in New York, USA via Vienna, Austria. Living as émigrés in NYC, Elena and Edward fell in the circles of self-proclaimed dissident intellectuals, but while Eddie was writing his novels and living on a welfare, Elena managed to get a fairly successful career in fashion modeling, allegedly becoming the first Russian model in New York. Soon enough they drifted apart due to the increasingly different lifestyles and Elena's numerous self-admitted infidelities, and had a pretty ugly break-up in circa 1975.

Elena became a central character of Limonov's first major novel, profanity-filled It's Me, Eddie: A fictional memoir («Это я, Эдичка»), completed in 1976. Limonov was pretty rough in his judgement about his ex-wife, exposing intimate details of their relationship and calling her 'treacherous, adulterous, childless pleasure-seeker'.

In a mean time Elena married italian count, thus became countess de Carli and started writing pretty bleak poetry. She played a small role (credited as Schapova) in 1989 movie 'Torrents of Spring' starring Nastassja Kinski. In the early '80s she retaliated by writing a book It's Me, Elena: Interview with myself («Это я, Елена»), edited by poet Konstantin K. Kuzminsky and published in 1984 (never translated in English). Naturally enough, Elena dubbs Eddie a 'psycho loser' and reveales yet even more private and intimate information.

The book was supplemented with a photo gallery, containing nue pictures from Elena's modeling portfolio. To the great susprise of the editor Kuzminsky, contessa was very upset about the presence of these pictures in the book.

Cindy Crawford + Christy Turlington = ?

Questions about Cindy Crawford's sexual preferences got stirred up again last year after the infamous passage in Jenna Jameson's book. In fact there were many rumours back in the 90s that Cindy was bisexual, some even suggesting she had an affair with Christy Turlington. The latter was because the famous American models were photographed kissing behind the Roxy nightclub in New York in 1991. The story was reported by the tabloids (allegedly Celebrity Sleuth magazine), but for some reason I was never able to trace the reference to any particular publication, nor was I able to find that picture of Cindy and Christy in a lip-lock.

So Cindy was caught kissing Christy, big deal, who wasn't photographed kissing Turlington in '91? In the picture we can see Christy Turlington and Alexandra Valenti having their fun. Nevertheless for some reason there aren't that many speculations about Christy's sexual orientation, it seems that only Cindy Crawford episode is ever mentioned, and even then it's always Cindy and never Christy, who is claimed to be lesbian or bisexual.

In her 2004 book How to Make Love Like a Porn Star: A Cautionary Tale Jenna Jameson lifts the lid on the celebrities she claims have hit on her and the list includes Cindy Crawford. Jameson recounts her encounter with the supermodel, whom she met while Jameson was doing a guest-hosting session on the E! Channel at Planet Hollywood in Bangkok.

"I kept getting a weird vibe from her," Jameson, a self confessed bisexual who's had sex with hundreds of women, wrote. "I knew what it meant, because I'd experienced it so many times before, but I kept dismissing it. It couldn't be true: she was Cindy Crawford, after all." The adult film star writes "When I turned my back, Cindy reached over and rubbed the back of my neck. 'Ooh,' she cooed. 'Look at your beautiful tattoo!'. She touched my neck so softly and sensually" she goes on "It was too much. She was so larger than life that I couldn't even imagine running my tongue along that trademark mole of hers. So I excused myself to get a drink".

Crawford's publicist Annette Wolf, in a not-surprising move for a publicist, said the lesbian claim about her client is emphatically not true. "Not even remotely in any way, shape or form is that true!". According to Cindy's lawyers, it never happened and Jameson owes Crawford a handwritten letter, retracting the statements in the book. Jameson's husband, Jay Grdina, said Crawford's lawyers would receive a letter on "the twelfth of Never-uary."

Whether true or not, this story once again raised a question about Cindy's alleged bisexuality. Back in the day, after she appeared on the cover of Aug/1993 Vanity Fair with k.d. lang, Cindy and her then-husband Richard Gere (also rumoured to be gay) placed an ad in London Times (6/May/1994): "We are heterosexual and monogamous and take our commitment to each other very seriously". Even before that there was a rumour about Cindy having an affair with Christy Turlington, after the two were photographed kissing.

Steve met Cindy Crawford at a small birthday party for another ELITE model, Stephanie Seymour at the Paris restaurant CHEZ FERNAND. Steve recalls that "It was an incredible evening if you really think about it, here at the same table together, and all just beginning their careers were three girls who would become the very definition of the word supermodel." (The third was Linda Evangelista, whom Steve Landis had already cast and booked for a hosiery advertising promotion with British VOGUE, which they would shoot on location in London a few weeks later.

"Sometimes the model agencies like to wine and dine the young photographers with the fashion models. And as used to being around beautiful women as we are,(fashion photographers that is), it was a special night to remember having Cindy Crawford seated next to me on my right Stephanie Seymour on my left, and Linda Evangelista across from me at the modelparty".

"I was really impressed with Cindy Crawford's look, and requested to her agency that she come to show me her book on a go- see (appointment) the next day. She did, and we had a conversation about her modeling experiences up till that point. I learned that she was from the outskirts of Chicago. After some early rough going, not being instantly accepted in that same town, Cindy Crawford had begun to work very regularly for the great local and internationally renowned photographer VICTOR SKREBNESKI".

"That summer, like so many other hopeful young models, Cindy Crawford had come to Paris to develop her book. After a brief stop in Italy, where, while working for PATRICK DEMARCHELIER, on a job for, I was told, Italian VOGUE, they'd convinced her into letting them chop off her long hair. Well, it may have been a beautiful summer in Paris, but let's just say Cindy was not too happy. Like so many young girls who get used to long hair for most of their lives, and equate that long hair with sexiness, the short cut was a bit of a shock to Cindy. I told her she looked very fresh and sexy, very modern actually. She didn’t buy it and told me that she was going to grow it out as soon as she could. She had her own opinion and didn’t care what others thought, she felt better with long hair and that was that".

"Well for me it was actually a great opportunity, that haircut, because I had just been assigned to photograph a beauty story on the subject of . . . short haircuts by the French fashion magazine 20 ANS . . . I needed to find four different girls with short haircuts or girls willing to cut their hair short. I actually already knew, that Cindy Crawford was destined to be a major star, and was determined not to let the opportunity to work with her, and have her in my book, slip away. But the pressure was on because she was only going to remain in Paris only for another week or so, before she went home to the States. (Sometimes you need not only talent but great timing to achieve something memorable. . . when in doubt, take the timing.) So I decided to take her with me personally, to the magazine's offices in the 15th district of Paris. When we got there, I immediately started telling them 'Isn't she great? Why don't we also do a cover try with her?' Well I must have been really anxious because I think I asked them at least three or four times before they agreed to let me also do the cover try with Cindy. Elisabeth Chicot did the fashion styling, while the highly talented make-up artist Mary Greenwell and the exceptional hair stylist Guillaume of Mod’s Hair in Paris completed the creative team. Shortly after I turned in the film from the shoot, the art director and editors confirmed to me that we did indeed have the October 1984 cover of 20ANS."

"A great thing about Cindy Crawford was that she really was humble, and had sort of a matter of fact attitude about her modeling. She did not realize at all, how much potential she had, and just how lucky she was, really being blessed to have one of those faces that the camera just loves. When I asked her about eventually moving to New York to take her modeling to the highest level, she seemed to think that things were going well enough in Chicago and why would she need to move to New York? I said because the top photographers in New York, such as the great RICHARD AVEDON, were going to love her. She really didn't know that she was that special".

"About one month later I was visiting with the late great director artistic, MARTIN SCHMULGRUBER, of FIGARO MADAME, in his office in Paris, and we were talking about of course what else, models. The conversation turned to Martin describing what he thought was a great model. He said, 'this is a great model' as he held up a sheet of film of Cindy Crawford. 'You see. . . I can use almost every single shot of her, more than thirty out of a roll of thirty six, I have so much choice. . . that to me is a great model.' I agreed and said that my experience had been similar, just having shot her for the 20ANS cover. He said that they had just decided to use her on a cover also, photographed by TOSCANI, on what turned out to be the next day after I'd shot her for 20ANS. It was funny, we were like little kids both claiming bragging rights as to who was first."

Cindy Crawford’s first cover and the "afiche" that hung in the streets all over Paris to promote the issue. 20Ans is a hip magazine for teenage girls in France. Over the years many girls who went on to much bigger fame got their start on the cover of 20Ans.

Tatiana Alexandrovna Zelenetskaya, was born in 1972 in Kiev. For some inconceivable to me reason she goes by the last name Zdrok, that of her sister Victoria's ex-husband. I don't think she actually changed her last name legally though, probably it's just that Zdrok is much easier for anglophone pronunciation than Zelenetskaya. Anyway, according to her autobiography she couldn't get into the university to study archaeology "because her parents were not members of the Communist Party" (quite a phoney excuse, especially in circa 1990, take my word for that), so she went to a different school and graduated with a dergee in education, just like her mommy.
Soon after she moved to the US to join her sister and mother and "began learning the American ways" (taking her clothes off, I guess, and getting a boob job down the road). Tatiana presently maintaines adult-oriented website UninhibitedIsland.com under the assumed name of Lara Buenfil - yet another mistery of her name - no clue where this one came from. In a mean time she's either got or is still pursuing her PhD in Archaeology from "one of the best", but nameless University.

Karol Jozef Wojtyla, better known as Pope John Paul II, passed away yesterday. Among many other things, CNN dubbed the late pope "a shrewd and unflinching opponent of communism". This blog is hardly a place to comment on the pope's legacy, but this whole story reminded me of the 1961 Treasure Chest: "This Godless Communism" comic book (hosted by The Authentic History Center).
Now I've seen my share of tasteless and downright stupid Soviet as well as anti-Soviet pieces of propaganda, but nothing really tops this corny and hatefull comic book, which, by the way, was endorsed by none other than J. Edgar Hoover himself. Someone please explain to me, why in the country, which boasts to be as free and democratic as it gets, children's books have to be endorsed by the FBI Director?

An editorial, photographed by Patrick Demarchelier on Harbour Island in the Bahamas, with a lenghty double title "From Russia with Sand, Surf, and Microbikinis!" and "Slavs of Fashion: The New Beauties" was published in April/2005 issue of Vanity Fair. Featured models are: Natalia Vodianova, Carmen Kass, Karolina Kurkova, Eugenia Volodina, Hana Soukupova, Marija Vujovic, Natasha Poly, Valentina Zelyaeva, Inguna Butane. Gawker bashed this ed on the grounds that Eastern European models aren't representing any new trend and that the whole thing rather belongs to Maxim than to Vanity Fair. IMHO this is much better than pretty much anything published in Maxim, but I do have a bone to pick with Evgenia Peretz, who wrote the text for this ed. Out of the total of 9 models only 4 (Vodianova, Volodina, Poly & Zelyaeva) are from Russia and only 6 (+ Kass & Butane) from the former Soviet Union, so there is a little problem with "From Russia..." title. The other version of the title - "Slavs of Fashion" - concentrates on the ethnicity, rather than the country of origin, and does a better job, but still isn't quite correct - Kass is Estonian, Butane is Latvian, and neither Estonian, nor Latvian belongs to Slavic subfamily of Indo-European family (Latvian -> Baltic -> Indo-European; Estonian -> Finno-Ugric -> Uralic). And I'm not even going to start about as stupid as it gets "Got Vodka?" slogan...

Anyway, here are the pics:

And finally a note about the spelling of Russian lastnames. Luckily for Водянова and Володина, their last names adopted single versions of transliteration, which they are now known by - Vodianova and Volodina respectively. Poor Зеляева is being probably equvally often credited as either Zelyaeva or Zeliaeva and every once in a while as Zelaeva. This probably explains why Полевщикова decided to reduce cumberosme latinisation of her lastname - Polevshchikova - to simple Poly.

Yamilla Coba is a Cuban model. Unfortunately very limited info on her is available online and mostly in Spanish. What I was able to figure out was that she's in her early twenties, she was born in Cuba, went to school to study Marine Science, but quit or rather postponed her studies to pursue a modeling career. Forbes published Top Topless Beaches 2005 review, so I figured I'd put up a little compilation of my own. Sexy, laid-back beach style came to the western culture from Saint-Tropez on France's Cote d'Azur, popularized and made chic by the likes of Brigitte Bardot and Ursula Andress. Of course, the French were not the first people to frolic on the beach in a state of semi-undress - the Polynesians after all have been doing it for millennia, honoring this fact it's even considered to be OK in stick-up-the-ass United States to publish pictures of topless aboriginal women in magazines considered to be 'family', like Life or National Geographic, despite of that nothing seems to be scarier for 'values' advocates than human female breasts.

Well, let's not get carried away here - should we mention South of France topless beauties (softb.com) - here is little something:

According to the popular belief, most of the European beaches are top-free nowadays, i.e. it's acceptable for women to sunbath topless if they choose to, quite contrary to the situation in the US. This is what we're missing:

* pics: Why we go to the beach collection

Of course people in the US still enjoy looking at bikini beach pics, even though it's nothing forbidden and can be seen on every beach, which to some extent justifies europeans collecting topless pics.
