Herr Oberst stands in German for Mister Colonel in English, or Monsieur Colonel in French, or господин полковник in Russian.

In the picture: actor V. Tikhonov (В. Тихонов) in the role of Max Otto von Stirlitz (Col. Maxim Isayev) in cult Soviet 1973 mini TV series Seventeen Moments of Spring. He wears uniform with the insignia of SS Standartenführer, the rank equivalent to Oberst in Wehrmacht.

Maxwell's Daemon is a character in an 1867 thought experiment by the Scottish physicist James Clerk Maxwell, meant to illustrate the Second law of Thermodynamics. The acronym for Maxwell's Daemon, maxwelld, was devised by analogy with standard UNIX daemons (telnetd, ftpd, sshd, etc.).

Blog's title Pin-up in Offizierskaserne is a loose, in a sense that the word 'Offizierskaserne' doesn't seem to exist in German language, translation of "Pin-up in Officer's Headquaters". The idea behind the title is that pictures of the beautiful ladies posted in the blog could've made conversation pieces in the tidiest officer's mess.

Despite its German title the blog is written in English, with occasional phrases in Russian - author's second and first languages respectively.

In real world the author goes by the name of Alex. He was born in the late '70s in the USSR, studied Physics and Math at MIPT in the '90s, and then moved to the USA to pursue a PhD degree.

The only non-fictional connections of the author with the military were the assignment of the local draft-board to be enlisted in the Airborn Troops, should he be drafted, and later the completed Reserve Officer Training Program at MIPT, which resulted in the commision to the rank of RVSN Lieutenant in the Reserve.
